Creating Site Collection – The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found
By peter.stilgoe
When creating a site collection from a site collection template you have created you get the following error:
“The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found. ”
This error seems to occur if they account you are logged in as when trying to create the site collection is not added to the site collection administrators on the creation screen.
Add the currently logged in account to the SC administrators & your site collection will be created with your custom SC template with no errors.

Rename the custom tab for your organizations templates
By peter.stilgoe
In the selection interface, you’ll see a ‘Custom’ tab for your organizational templates
This is confusing to some end users
Here is one way to improve this
Find the file core.en-US.resx in the \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\Resources folder.
Edit the value for “TemplatePickerControl_Custom”, changing it from ‘Custom’ to whatever you want ie.XYZ Templates.
Do an IISRESET on your front end webservers.
