Import data from CSV and SQL to a SharePoint list

By peter.stilgoe

This SharePoint feature allows you to quickly import data from a CSV file or a SQL stored procedure to any custom SharePoint list.

Once you have added the solution to your farm and activated it on your site collection an additional menu option will be available on the Action menu of each custom list that will take you to the import CSV or SQL page.

Simply select which option you want – either import from a CSV file or import from a SQL stored procedure. Next, browse to the CSV file or enter the SQL connection and name of the stored procedure and hit the Import button.

There is a check box option to delete all items from the list before doing the import which is not selected by default.

    Hello Peter,
It’s actually a nice idea to share such information. But when coming from Google it would be nice to know following information:
    1. Sharepoint Version = ?
    2. You are talking of a feature/tool but you don’t mention it’s name or even it’s location
    3. The link “Click here” doesn’t work at all…

I tried to import a spreadsheet over the “import spreadsheet-option” what wasn’t working. First of all when I click Browse to locate the file, the file-extension-filter only allows me to import the following types:
    1. All files (*.*)
    2. Image files (*.jpg,*.png,…)
    3. Websites (*.htm, *.html)

When I choose all files and select my “xls, csv or whatever I tried”-file and click on Import, a dialogue box pops up telling me that there’s no data in it. But there is data in it. The file was a spreadsheet export from another list in sharepoint. I also did unlink it from sharepoint so that I really only have a normal xls/csv file with content in it.

    Thanks for your post!
    Greetz Oli
